Amatya is one of the six types of Shrestha surnames. Amatya is also called Mahajun. In the ancient Lichhavi period, the ministerial post was called Amatya. In the medieval period, a high-level central position gradually transformed into a high-status family surname. As part of King Jayasthiti Malla's social reforms, they were entrusted with 'Mahan' (great) and military duties. Amatya lineage Members were accepted as the King's right-hand men and direct advisors.
Amatyas usually reside near the royal palace. Especially the Amatyas residing in Lalitpur are found in various places of Kathmandu Valley like Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Nepal Gaon. They follow Hinduism.
