The Uday is one of the castes within the Newar community. The Uday are a Buddhist community, primarily residing in Kathmandu Valley, specifically in Kathmandu, with Agamchhen and Digudyah (lineage deity temples), who consider Vajracharyas as their priests, follow one religion and one set of rituals, and engage in various occupations for their livelihood. The etymology of the word 'Uday' seems to be derived from the word 'Upasak' (devotee/lay worshipper). The Uday are devotees of Buddha. It appears that the word 'Upasak' has evolved into 'Uday'.
Within the Uday caste, there are nine sub-castes: Silakar, Sthapit, Kansakar, Tuladhar, Tamrakar, Sindurakar, Sikhrakar, Bania, and Selalik.
