Ichangu Narayan

Ichangu is an old settlement in the valley. This place is located in the north-western direction from Kathmandu district. To the east of Ichangu is Swayambhu, to the west are Ramkot and Bhimdhunga, to the north are Goldhunga and Dhading, and to the south is Sitapaila. In ancient times, King Haridatta Verma established one of the four Narayan deities (Shikhar Narayan) at the four corners of the valley, and one of them is established here. The Narayan deity here is called Ichangu Narayan, and this place is named after this deity. Here, during the Lichhavi period, in the year 194 BS, the Chandreshwar Shivling was established. There is an inscription. Similarly, 'Shri Haridatta Bhupati Kritannanaraya ...' Another inscription has also been found. These two inscriptions from the Lichhavi period indicate that this place has been developing since ancient times. However, it is not known what the name of this place was at that time.
The first historical source of the medieval period found here is the inscription of Vijayakamadev, installed in Nepal Sambat 315. That inscription also mentions Narayanadyah. In the late medieval period, this place was clearly referred to as Ichangu. The inscription of King Nripendra Malla of Kantipur state mentions the names of people living in Ichangu. In the modern period, a royal seal (Lalmohar) written by Pratap Singh Shah in Bikram Sambat 1833 also referred to it as Ichangu. This name is said to have come into use from the Newar language. 'Ichan' and 'gu' are two words that combine to form Ichangu. This is a place where many 'ikan' grow in the high-altitude forest. Therefore, this place was called Ikangu. That name later corrupted to become Ichangu.
