The artistic window carved on the main part of the house facing outward is called Sanjhya. Sanjhya is a characteristic feature of Newar houses. It is also an attraction. In ancient temples, deity houses, sattal (rest houses), bahal (courtyard monasteries) of the Kathmandu Valley, as well as in every house in every locality, Sanjhyas are carved. Sanjhya is the identity of a Newar house.
The art of Sanjhya is not merely a product of the artist's emotions, but is intertwined with cultural and religious philosophies. Therefore, the patterns used in the windows of Hindu, Shaiva, and Buddhist community's temples, deity houses, sattal, and bahal differ.
